Ask HN: How to cope with the death of a dear person?

My father-in-law passed away three days ago. As it happens with these things, it was too soon. It's always too soon. He was like a second father to me. He had a career in the Italian navy, a retired Admiral. He was a great storyteller, and had a tough and difficult character, but lots of good things, deep inside. Full of integrity, honorable. Thankfully we moved back to Italy a few months ago after a dozen years abroad, and spent this time mostly with him and his wife, in their hometown, Venezia. I can't imagine what it would be if we stayed in San Francisco, and this death happened at distance. Does any of you have a time machine at hand? Both me and my wife would like to tell him how much we love him, and hear his great stories one last time. Missing that, any suggestion on how you coped with death? It is not my first time; but it is the first time in the last decade or so. I know, I'm lucky. One last thing: I don't want to just "ask", but I'd like to contribute something. This is my suggestion for you, actually my prescription for you: if you still have parents, or parents-in-law that you really love, invite them out for dinner, and ask them to tell you stories of their past. Then, before saying goodbye, tell them how much you love them. One day, far away in the future I hope, you will thank me.

Ask HN: Did preparing for LeetCode type of interviews improve your skills?

I'm not new to the field and I have nearly a decade years of experience under my belt. I'm currently job hunting and decided I'm not gonna shy away from LeetCode type of interviews as before (I used to refuse to proceed with any company that had this as part of their interview process) and actually give it a shot. As I'm doing some Hackerrank/LeetCode exercises, I'm actually enjoying solving these puzzles. I'm wondering if anyone who went through this prepping for an interview ended up being technically better overall. I know that I rarely needed this kind of skill in my career, but also I'm wondering if there were cases where I did need them and I didn't know. Cheers!

Ask HN: Is it better to generalise or specialise as a developer?

I’m a freelancer, and very much a generalist. I’ll often say I can do something I haven’t done before (which has proven to be true) as an excuse to learn something new. I find different kinds of projects keep me interested. One month web dev, next month apps, the next month microcontrollers, next automation, etc. I often hear it’s good to find a niche. Wondering if anyone can speak to the benefits of doing so? Thanks!

Ask HN: I think I hate the software development industry? Am I crazy?
62 by goodbyeworld37 | 36 comments on Hacker News.
I can’t stand software development. I hate the work, hate the people, the culture, etc. The idea of continuing this until for many more decades is sickening. Additionally I’ve pigeonholed myself into an area of the industry that’s is particularly draining (though not for the reasons you may thing). Money is not a huge concern to me, but if I’m going to have to do something I hate 8+ hours a day, I would at least to prefer to be making enough money to distract me from it. I’m not anywhere near there at the moment. I’ve considered maybe just doing the leetcode circus and trying to land mind numbing FAANG job so I can at least have the luxury of otherwise unheard of money. But it’s not ideal and I’m not sure I’d be cut out for it. I’ve never been a particularly good software developer compared to many of the people I’ve interacted with. I’d gladly accept less money (within reason) to work on something that excites me, but that’s about the least likely scenario, between the narrow and poorly definable category of what I would find enticing and the basically impossible to obtain requirements on the fee jobs I do see. I’ve considered going back to school, to try something else, and was actually very close, in fact I nearly registered for classes. But I can’t afford it: not the monetary cost, not the time cost. If I could magically pull tens of thousands of dollars out of my ass tomorrow maybe, or if I wouldn’t be well into my 30s by the time I finished, it would be a different situation. Even then it’s unheard to go from software to anything I’d be interested in.
