Show HN: Thi.ng – open-source building blocks for computational design https://ift.tt/2HKCabs
Show HN: Thi.ng – open-source building blocks for computational design The first stage of the new http://thi.ng website is live, an up-to-date & hopefully more useful springboard to the 250+ projects and overview of my opensource activity since 2006... Work is ongoing, collecting & re-organizing projects, assets, documentation and extracting interrelationships (incl. older work & music projects (e.g. http://thi.ng/synstack related), clients/people...). Aim is a proper archive of the past 20+ years of outputs & encounters. This is the first website update since 2015. As the timeline visualizations show, building(http://thi.ng) > marketing(http://thi.ng) - maybe unusual these days, but hey... :) The entire site is generated w/ tools from the http://thi.ng/umbrella collection, e.g. http://thi.ng/egf (graph file format), http://thi.ng/csv (semantic CSV parsing), https://ift.tt/37k8nPP (functional data transformations), http://thi.ng/defmulti (multiple dispatch for template engine), http://thi.ng/hiccup (HTML/SVG generation), http://thi.ng/viz (timeline visualizations), http://thi.ng/color (heatmap gradients) There's also a massive spreadsheet (148k cells adjacency matrix) to centrally define & manage the 570+ tags used to categorize the 257 projects/repositories and to batch update their package files (edits ongoing, much fun!). The tag/project relationships are compiled into an HTML list with project IDs stored as base90-encoded data attributes for each tag in the tag cloud (http://thi.ng/#tags) The timeline visualizations are generated directly from local Git repos, package files and associated metadata stored in a number of linked http://thi.ng/egf graphs. The site toolchain will be released in due course... Last but not least, any constructive feedback (good or bad) is very welcome! The next phase will include more individual project details, images, making-of docs, videos, xrefs etc. Currently, just a step in the right direction... November 28, 2020 at 06:21PM

I have a topic I’d like to write about. However, I’m getting lost In the weeds and failing to structure my content in an easy to consume way. What are some great resources to learn writing blog posts / articles? I’m actually open to pay for a professional coach but not sure how to find a good one. Suggestions are welcome!

I have $1M cash in my bank – how can I stretch it so I can retire & live off it?
23 by archeantus | 32 comments on Hacker News.
I’ve worked hard in the tech industry for the last eight years and have saved up a nest egg. In addition to that I recently sold my house which means I literally have $1M in my bank account right now. For so many on here that is not too much money, but for me and my bg, I feel more fortunate than I ever could have dreamed of being. I like my job, but it’s stressful. My dream is to use this nest egg to make investments that will grow the capital and allow me to live off of it. Am I jumping the gun? Is $1M not enough? I’m sure I could get way more money if I endure more years of my job, but I so want a break. What are the chances of taking $1M and investing so that I don’t have to work anymore?

Show HN: Anima 4 (YC S18) – Turn design work into developer-friendly React code
6 by avishic | 1 comments on Hacker News.
Hi everyone! We’re Avishay, Or, and Michal, co-founders of Anima (www.animaapp.com). Anima converts design (Figma/Sketch/XD) into code automatically. Up until today, we only produced HTML/JS/CSS. With our latest release, we can now also generate developer-friendly React code. We’re here to replace image-based handoff, which involves a lot of grunt work for the engineers who have to translate all those images into code that does the same thing. For designers, the pain we solve is the ping-pong, and their vision getting lost in translation. The bottom line is that teams can deliver faster. With our latest release, developers can now cherry-pick any design element and get code. The generated code is clean, dependency-free, and runnable. We produce HTML or React, and soon Vue.js and Angular. Over the past few months, we've been iterating with our community (now 300,000 users) to find out what still bothers developers when getting generated code, and have been tackling these issues one by one. For examples, we recently added an automatic flex layout, our software now extracts repeating UI components automatically as React components, and it also now can detect CSS patterns and extract common behavior. Our goal is to produce human-level UI code, leaving only business logic to humans. The code we generate is clean and developer-friendly and gets better every day. We’d love to get your feedback on this. Check it out and let us know your questions and ideas. Criticism is welcome! Thank you!

Ask HN: What underestimated technologies will dominate within 5 years?
13 by panabee | 3 comments on Hacker News.
This chart[1] from anandtech.com plots the impressive performance trajectory of Apple silicon over several years. Of course, no technology is guaranteed to continue improving forever. The sustained performance gains reflect Apple's tremendous dedication and investment in the endeavor. After the A11 chip, though, it became clear there was a non-zero probability that Apple could one day meet or surpass Intel. Which begs the question: what underestimated technologies exist today that could overtake incumbent technologies within 5 years? Put another way: what technologies are in the A11 stage and not yet widely recognized for its potential? [1] https://ift.tt/38Wwir1
