New top story on Hacker News: Awful Amazon Interview Experince
Awful Amazon Interview Experince
13 by amir734jj | 4 comments on Hacker News.
I just wanted to share my recent experience interviewing with Amazon. I hope it helps everyone. About myself: I am a Ph.D. candidate in computer science, work at a financial company as a senior engineer, and teaching part-time at my university courses such as compiler, algorithm and data structures. I live in the midwest, USA. I love doing interviews and solving algorithm questions. Background: I interviewed at Palo Alto, CA office about a year ago and although it went well and I answered all the questions I was told: "this position wasn't a best fit for me" ... A few weeks ago I was reached out by an Amazon recruiter about an opportunity in the Seattle area and I was told the previous recruiter did not find a best match for me and she apologized for wasting my time. She said they would like to do a another round of interviews. As I love challenging myself, I said yes and I did a screening which I was given 2 algorithm questions and about 2 hours and I solved both of them and all my unit tests passed. For the second round of the interview, it was all online for 4 hours and I solved all questions and my code passed all unit tests for all their algorithm problems. Today I got a call from the recruiter saying that I was rejected because "my technical skills were lacking". I didn't want to argue with the recruiter so I accepted the feedback. I just wanted to share my story because I always saw these interviews with Amazon and Google as a challenge but now I feel like they are a complete joke. People who interviewed me were so arrogant and clueless. They had no clue how to calculate time complexity. No clue why provided unit tests were not enough and etc. They were just looking at the solution and thinking they know everything. I am so disappointed at Amazon and their interviewing process.

Ask HN: Any resource on how to repair MacBook logic board?
13 by jklein11 | 6 comments on Hacker News.
My macbook won't turn on and I am afraid that it is a logic board issue. In other times I think I would be shopping for a new laptop but I am thinking that with the quarantine I have some time to try and fix it myself. I am watching some videos on how to debug the circuit board issues[1] and I am wondering if anyone has any personal experience doing this. Any resources you could share in how to get started would be greatly appreciated! 1. https://ift.tt/2zBaYrr

Show HN: Tiny game made overnight for the 2020 Blender 24hr art competition https://ift.tt/2XYXnnJ
Show HN: Tiny game made overnight for the 2020 Blender 24hr art competition It was Saturday night, deep into a dark chocolate bar and well-paired Cabernet, when Cranksy [0] pinged me on IRC gauging interest in collaborating on this year's Blender [1] competition. "Would it be too much work to just throw an ANSI on the screen and play an ogg file?" he asked. Inebriated enough to get a little enthusiastic about something like this, I joined #blender on efnet, and noted this year's words had already been chosen. "Damn, we've got a late start." I thought as I read the channel's topic: Monkeys / Rescuing / Between Realities It must have been all the COVID-19 news I've been endlessly assaulted with, because it was immediately clear that these words would fit perfectly with a game of monkeys saving other monkeys from viruses by transporting them to another reality. A bottle of wine and one sleepless night of drunken coding later and a tiny game [2] is born. WARNING: there's a potentially NSFW ANSI graphic in-game, if ANSI can possibly be considered NSFW. Unusual for these kinds of things, I'm also releasing the entire C source code [3] of everything needed to rebuild and fork/hack if desired. The only external dependencies are SDL2, SDL_Mixer, whatever those pull in like libvorbis/libogg, and OpenGL. If you clone the repository, be sure to use a recursive clone as there are submodules. Also, if you'd like to be notified via email of interesting creations like these, you can submit your email address in the text box @ http://pengaru.com. If you're interested in collaborating on making demos, intros, or video games, reach out - I prefer email, Cranksy is on twitter. Please be kind to my server, hopefully it doesn't get hugged to death, thanks! I already know that if I have to inquire about the price or ask for a login that the service is going to be some antiquated 90's bs. But occasionally I experience this for something I didn't expect, like cloud computing. I encountered a cloud service that had obscure hardware I was looking for, and unlike Amazon, Google, Azure, DigitalOcean etc this service needed for you to email them to get signed up! "Thank you for your interest! Where are you located and what does your work involve?" Okay "Sales Engineers", why is that relevant. Why is a human even answering this email? "I'm experimenting with deployments but latency isn't a big issue for me so any data center will be fine". You know, like you would say with Amazon, except in a dropdown. I jump through the hoops. Finally, I get to see what the interface is like, I'm poking around with no surprise that graphic design is an afterthought when suddenly You've got mail! My email client doesn't say that but his probably does. "I wanted to do a quick check-in and.." Aw that's nice and I also would have been totally fine contacting support whenever I got around to it! I checked out the interface, got my fill, decided it wasn't for me and moved on! All in all in one week it took: 10 emails to get signed up 1 email to tell me that "the system" should send me an email about my new account login 2 emails to get the account login and confirmation 4 emails to troubleshoot the broken account login system 1 automated onboarding email 3 checkin emails 1 automated 1 week anniversary onboarding email What's the way to tell people I want a self serve option? Reducing this email chain down to 3 emails. Why is that person employed? This was during the best market in the history of mankind and I was questioning that, and now everyone with a talent more relevant than customer "retention" should be just as annoyed, given how coveted a continual flow of oxygen is now. xx

I feel absolutely shit when I am trying to be relevant by spamming the trending tags, repeating what is already there in the form of SEO spam, email spamming, asking people to subscribe to thing they probably don't even care about. How do you handle this? Trying to keep track of what's trending tires me out. Why is it always hate, hate and hate. Why is it always politics or some celebrity expressing their "concerns" or cute puppies.

I have realized that I easily give up when I face a hard problem. This is hurting my career prospects. I have been thinking and it may have become an issue because I grew up in a high pressure environment, where a lot is expected from you. How do I change myself ? I have observed that a lot of times I have a vague idea of a problem I am trying to solve but I don't put in the effort to nail it down. This affects my confidence and I don't want to lead whenever I get an opportunity. How do I get out of this habit ?

What is the best way to learn Lisp in 2020?
8 by pmohun | 5 comments on Hacker News.
I've been eyeing Lisp out of the corner of my eye for years. I know I should learn it and it will likely change the way I think about programming. What is the best way to learn Lisp in 2020? I tend to learn best when I have a project to work on that plays to the strength of the language. Some questions: - Should I start with Common Lisp, or some popular dialect (Clojure?) - What are the big patterns that I should be aware of? What is easier to do Lisp than is missing from functional languages like Python? - What are some big projects built in Lisp (other than this site)? - If it's so good, why isn't it more popular?

Show HN: Infstream – We’re trying to fix video monetization for creators TL;DR: https://ift.tt/2VFChrA Hi HN – we’re Ben & Callum from Infstream. We’ve always been heavy users of YouTube, for entertainment, education and sharing. Towards the end of last year, we saw more and more horror stories of YouTubers losing their livelihood to the ad algorithm. We decided to build a content-first video platform, which aims to reduce issues by removing advertisers from the equation. Instead, we charge for the content you watch – bold, I know. Instead of paying in advertising and data, users on Infstream build their own streaming package, a channel at a time. Anyone can start a channel (US & UK now, Europe soon) and earn directly from their subscribers. Subscribers pay $1 per month per channel, of which the channel receives $0.75. This all begins from the first subscriber, there are no minimums to start monetization. Channels have total control, and can publish on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule – whatever is working for them and their subscribers. They’re free to keep publishing on other sites (we recommend it), and can promote exclusive content to their existing audience, quickly growing an ad-independent revenue stream. We’re getting ready to launch, and are inviting creators to sign up beforehand to get their channel ready. If you or a connection has had issues with publishing on YouTube we’d love to hear from you, and learn some more about the pain points. The platform is stocked with demo content, it would be great to get some feedback. https://ift.tt/2VFChrA This was also my first production project using Hasura (super positive), so can share my experience if you’re considering trying it. Stack: - Hasura (GraphQL) - Lambda + S3 - Mux - Cube.js - Stripe Connect / Atlas - Vue 2 Callum and I will be hanging out in the comments to answer any questions. Feel free to drop me an email at ben@infstream.com if you’ve got questions or want to chat. April 18, 2020 at 07:24AM
